On November 28, 2015 was the graduation of students who participated in the course of Spiritual Guides. The majority of them will continue working to meet the requirements to get a Spiritual Guides Certificate Course offered jointly by Hekima University College and Mwangaza Jesuit Spirituality Centre.
From January 25-30 took place the 2nd Annual Seminar of Ignatian Spirituality. The event is addressed to meet the ongoing formation needs of Mwangaza’s associate staff who join us in the retreat guidance ministry.
From January 25-30 took place the first of eight formation blocks of the Spiritual Guides course 2016-2017. 40 participants were accepted to follow the course. Welcome.
From February 1-6 took place the first of four formation blocks of the Ignatian retreat guides course.
From February 1-5 Mwangaza welcomed it 6-day annual spiritual retreat in Italian. This year the facilitator and preacher was Fr. Alessandro Barban, Prior General of the Camaldolese Order and of the Monastery of Camaldoli, Italy. Some 20 lay, religious and priests attended the retreat. This year the theme was the Gospel of St. Luke.
February 8-13: Mwangaza welcomed a Seminar organized by the German Conference of Religious for their local partners in development works. 39 participants came from all corners of Africa and Germany to reflect about their witness as well as their ministries among the needy. They will meet again in Mwangaza in the coming month of May.
March 1-10: Thanks to the generous gift of some benefactors, Mwangaza has been able to replace the old tile roof of Ricci House, a colonial building. The job was completed timely, just before mid-March rains started.
March 25: Renovation and painting of the Meehan and McGarrity dormitory wings began.
March 23-27: the Easter Triduum was very well attended at the Centre. It was facilitated by Fr. Emmanuel Mchopa, SJ. Many people came from outside to join us in the liturgical celebrations of the season.
May 9-14: Mwangaza received the 55 students participating in the 3rd formation block of the Certificate courses of Spiritual Guides and Ignatian Retreat Guides offered jointly by Hekima University College and Mwangaza Jesuit Spirituality Centre.
May 25-June 25: An historical record high of 40 retreatants came to Mwangaza for their 30-day retreat this year. Most of them were middle-age lay and religious women and men came from all over Africa, studying or working in Kenya.
July 17-21: Mwangaza Jesuit Centre hosted the world conference of the International Association of Jesuit Business Schools (IAJBS). Participants came from all over the globe to take part in this important event.
September 16-19: In the “Year of Mercy, “Mwangaza welcomed 28 weekend retreatants came to pray about “Jesus of Nazareth and the Compassion of God. Journeying with the theme of mercy in the Gospels”. The weekend was facilitated by Fr. Miguel Angel García, SJ
September 20-29: In the “Year of Mercy”, 25 retreatants did the thematic retreat entitled “Be Compassionate as my Father is Compassionate”. Fr. Miguel Angel García, SJ led participants through the theme of the mercy of God in Scriptures and in the faith of Jesus of Nazareth.
August 15 2017– September 15 2017-- Now we are preparing ourselves to begin the second 30-day retreat experience due to begin on August 15. Some 30 retreatants have already booked. These are mainly religious sisters and men who come for a prayer experience as they prepare themselves for final profession or on the occasion of their religious life jubilee celebration.
June 20, 2017 – As every year for the past seven years, Mwangaza hosted the 6-month long Tertianship Programme for members of the Society of Jesus. The programme was organized jointly by the Jesuits Provinces of Africa North-West and Eastern Africa. The programme began on January 8 and was attended by 12 Jesuits coming from different countries of the planet.
May 25 – June 25, 2017 -- Worth mentioning is that this year we had 28 30-day retreatants for our May 25-June 25 retreat. These were mainly seminarians coming from different groups, who do their 30-day experience when they are in 2nd or 3rd year of theology studies. These include personnel in formation from the Missionaries of Africa, St. Patrick and Mill Hill. And since the experience has proved to give abundant fruits, students from the Holy Cross, joined in. A few women religious and lay people topped up the group.
April 24, 2017 -- We had hardly said good bye to Sr. Máire when the sudden death of Sr. Annefridah Mukwanyaga, NSA, a full-time resident staff member at Mwangaza, took us all by surprise. Sr. Annefridah had come back to work in Mwangaza as a retreat guide and formation staff roughly two years ago. Previously, she had worked at the Centre’s administration for some ten years. She is greatly missed. We count on her prayers from Heaven. You may see a photo of Sr. Annefridah in the photo section of the Mwangaza staff.
April 19, 2017 -- Sr. Máire O’Nolan, IBVM, who lived and worked at Mwangaza for over 20 years was assigned by her Provincial superior to take up another mission. On Easter Wednesday the Centre’s staff celebrated her farewell with a Eucharist and a lunch. Mwangaza cannot thank Sr. Máire enough for all that she has meant for us as well as for the many who benefited under her discerning guidance. January 3-6, 2017 – Mwangaza hosted the Assembly of the Eastern Africa Province of the Society of Jesus. Jesuit companions came from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya.
